Home/Hanoi
The capital · a thousand years of history
Hanoi
Vietnam’s political and cultural centre, where the Old Quarter’s guild streets, Hoan Kiem Lake and French colonial architecture stack on top of each other. Slower than Ho Chi Minh City — worth planning a looser itinerary.
Why this city
Dense history, walkable
Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter are within walking distance — half a day covers a slice of Vietnamese history.
The northern business gateway
Ministries, manufacturers and foreign-invested headquarters cluster here; most northern business trips are based in Hanoi.
Jumping-off point for Ha Long Bay
Most Ha Long Bay cruises depart from Hanoi, 2.5–3 hours away — doable as a day trip or an overnight.
Main districts
- Hoan Kiem — The Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake — guild streets, restaurants and boutique hotels, all walkable.
- Ba Dinh — The political quarter: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and the diplomatic enclave. Wide, quiet streets.
- Tay Ho — Where expats and long-stayers live — lake-view apartments, Western restaurants and international schools.
